CancerBACUP is the UK's leading national cancer information and support charity, providing a unique range of services to a wide constituency including cancer patients, their friends and families, the medical community and opinion leaders in healthcare. No other organisation responds to people affected by cancer so directly and with such depth of expertise.
Personal telephone information and support. 46,345 enquiries were answered by our specialist cancer nurses during the last twelve months. The nurses gave information and support on the types, treatments and implications of cancer.
Cancer publications and CD-ROM. Our ever-growing library of booklets (54 titles in March 1999) and over 70 factsheets cover every aspect of cancer, from the types of cancer and the different treatments to advice on practical, emotional and relationship issues.These are all available on a single CD-ROM for easy reference.
CancerBACUP News brings timely information to our service users, including balanced appraisals of new treatments and the personal experiences of cancer patients to help readers know they are not alone.
Website resource centre. Our website is a rich source of information on every aspect of cancer. Available all day every day, it is one of the busiest cancer websites in the world (www.cancerbacup.org.uk).
Local information centres. We have launched a programme of local information and support centres around the country. In 1998-9 we opened the first of the new local centres in Nottingham to extend our reach from our headquarters in London, CancerBACUP Scotland in Glasgow, and CancerBACUP Jersey. We plan to open many more local centres in the coming years.
Health Professionals. We provide information and support to the medical community on difficult or controversial cancer issues.
Advocacy. We lobby the government and advise the National Health Service on behalf of all cancer patients.
Counselling. CancerBACUP Scotland delivers intensive, face-to-face cancer counselling. Our nurses on the telephone helpline give patients and carers information about counselling services nationwide.
Media relations. We communicate important messages through the media in an effort to correct the many misconceptions surrounding cancer and its treatment.
