Communication

Based on patients’ experience and specialists’ expertise, CancerBACUP information covers every aspect of cancer: the disease, its treatments and living with cancer.

Information about treatment and research centres, support groups, therapists, counsellors, financial help, home nursing services… all this and much more is covered in the publications and available to callers. The cancer information specialist nurses also give emotional support based on their clinical experience and comprehensive, continuing training in communication and helpline skills.

CancerBACUP's policy is to provide up-to-date and accurate information on cancer and its treatments, inline with scientific evidence and accepted national and international guidelines. All CancerBACUP publications are regularly reviewed and updated by oncologists, specialist nurses, other relevant health professionals, and patients. So they present an agreed view on the cancer, its treatment and living with cancer.

The high quality of CancerBACUP publications is widely recognised in the health service. Publications describing treatments are produced to meet the criteria of the Discern index, which is a nationally recognised measure of health information quality. Where healthcare trusts have used CancerBACUP booklets in evidence to support their good practice, it has helped them to achieve compliance with the standards of the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts.

New publications in the year included:

  • Dying with cancer
  • Depression and cancer
  • the first CancerBACUP directory of cancer services and
  • Factfile 2001, which contained 93 new and updated factsheets on particular treatments, rare cancers, etc.

Three editions of CancerBACUP News were distributed to some 25,000 people affected by cancer, their carers and supporters.
