A meningioma is a type of brain tumour.
Meningiomas develop from cells in the meninges - the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
Most meningiomas are benign (not cancer). Malignant (cancerous) meningiomas are rare.
They are most common in the front part of the brain, over the cerebral hemispheres, although they can occur anywhere on the brain or spinal cord. Overall they make up about one fifth of all brain tumours.
