Several studies have found that pelvic floor exercises can help men to get back control of their bladder after prostate surgery. The exercises strengthen the muscles that control peeing.
Many surgeons recommend that you learn these exercises before your operation. This is so that you can practise them and strengthen your muscles in advance of the surgery. The longer before the operation you start doing these exercises the more benefit you are likely to get from them. You will also be advised to keep going with them after your surgery.
You will have a catheter in place for a week to ten days after your operation. There aren't clear guidelines on whether it is okay to do pelvic floor exercises if you have a catheter in. And, some doctors advise against it. So, it is best to get advice on this from the surgeon who will do your operation.
