NEWS > POLICY & PARLIAMENTPolicy and Parliament
Cancerbackup's Policy and Parliament team was shortlisted for an award for our campaigning work, and have achieved great successes for people living with cancer.
Our vision is a future in which cancer patients and their families have all the information and support they need to help them face cancer without fear. In addition to offering information and support to thousands of people through our national freephone helpline, our booklets, this website and our centres in hospitals around the country, Cancerbackup also campaigns on behalf of people affected by cancer.
We campaign on a wide range of issues affecting people living with cancer, including travel insurance, access to treatments, private medical insurance, and work and cancer. You can read more about this work in our campaigns pages.
Cancerbackup's Policy and Parliament team makes sure that Members of Parliament, Lords, Government Ministers and others in Whitehall hear the views of Cancerbackup's service users and know about our campaigns. Cancerbackup also provides the secretariat to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer.
NICE appraisals
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is responsible for appraising new treatments and producing guidance for their use within the NHS. Further information about these appraisals can be found on NICE’s website at www.nice.org.uk.
Cancerbackup is often involved in the appraisal of cancer treatments as a consultee in the process. This gives us the opportunity to put forward the patient’s perspective in determining whether a treatment should be made available on the NHS.
Details of Cancerbackup's campaign to improve access to treatments are available in our campaigns pages.
