There is no evidence at all to suggest that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) either causes bowel cancer, makes existing bowel cancer worse or causes past bowel cancer to recur. Indeed there is some evidence that it actually helps protect against bowel cancer.
But despite this, and although HRT has benefits in helping to control menopausal symptoms, and reducing the risk of osteoporosis (bone thinning), it does have drawbacks. These include an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and thrombosis (blood clots), and, in women over 50, an increased risk of breast cancer development. So you should discuss the possible risks and benefits of taking HRT in your own case with your family doctor before you make a decision.
