My daughter is pregnant and has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Is there any risk that it could spread to her baby?

Breast cancer has never been known to spread from the mother to the unborn baby. This is the case even in women with breast cancer which has spread to other parts of the body.

Although some cancers can spread to the placenta (the organ which connects the mother to the baby) most cannot spread to the baby itself. There are no reports of a baby being born with cancer as a result of a mother having breast cancer during pregnancy.
