My daughter has just been told she has a malignant melanoma. Is it right that taking the contraceptive pill could have caused this?

There are many 'folk myths' surrounding cancer and one of them is that taking oral contraceptives ('the pill') increases the risk of developing malignant melanoma.

A number of early studies did suggest that there might be such a link but later, larger, more detailed research has shown that there is no evidence to support this.

So, the current view of the experts is that there is no increased risk of getting a malignant melanoma if you use oral contraceptives. The same studies have also shown there is no increased melanoma risk as a result of using HRT.
