Is it better to have Zoladex injections for prostate cancer every month or every three months?

Zoladex (goserelin) reduces the level of testosterone in the blood and is very often an effective way of controlling prostate cancer. A similar drug Prostap (leuprorelin) works in the same way.

Zoladex and Prostap are both usually given by injections under the skin or into the muscle. Once injected, the drug is slowly released over a period of time. Both Zoladex and Prostap are available in two forms. In one form the drug is released over a month and in the other, longer acting preparation, it is released over three months. The one monthly and three monthly injections work equally well.

The advantage of the three monthly preparation is that you need fewer injections. The disadvantage is that if you need to change your treatment the drug will still be in your system for some time and this could be a problem.

Your doctor will be able to talk over the advantages and disadvantages with you in more detail.
