Is Stilboestrol still used in the treatment of prostate cancer?

Yes, Stilboestrol or diethylstilbestrol is still used to treat prostate cancer. It is a treatment for prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, such as the bones. This is called advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.

Diethylstilbestrol is more likely to cause side effects, such as blood clots, than some other types of hormone treatments. So it is usually only used if these other treatments are no longer working.

Nowadays it is used in much smaller doses than previously and this causes many less side effects. Men will often be prescribed a small dose of aspirin to take at the same time. This is to reduce the risk of blood clots. Sometimes doctors give it in even smaller doses together with a steroid. This may help to reduce the side effects without reducing the benefit.
