A cancer information nurse specialist provides cancer information, practical advice and emotional support which is free, independent, confidential and up to date. This service is available to all, including patients, their families, friends and carers, as well as health care professionals.

Information about cancer or its treatment

Our nurse can explain and clarify medical terms and give information about all types of cancer and the different treatments used. The nurse can help you cope with the symptoms, side effects and other aspects of cancer.

For people who prefer to use a language other than English, a service called Cancer In Your Language is available at the Cancer Information Centre.

Facilities

The Christie Hospital already has an extensive array of patient information and literature, which is complemented by the resources and expertise provided by Cancerbackup.

Publications

The Cancer Information Centre has a wide range of easy to understand booklets on most cancers and their treatments for you to take away. The information is up to date and includes practical ways of coping with cancer and its emotional effects.

The booklets on individual cancers describe what cancer is, which tests are used in diagnosis and how the cancer is treated, including possible side effects.

They also include sections on the feelings people often experience and ways in which people can help themselves. A reference section suggests organisations to contact for help and support and includes a list of books which may be helpful.

Internet Access

Access to the internet is available at the Cancer Information Centre. This gives patients the opportunity, for example, to research treatments with the guidance and advice of the nurse.
