I'm travelling abroad soon. Some of my medicines are liquids. Will I be able to carry them on the plane in my hand baggage if they are over the 100ml limit?

The general rule for airport security is that liquid is only allowed in hand luggage if it is carried in containers of 100ml or smaller and can fit inside the clear plastic bag supplied by security. It is possible to take more than one container of medicine - as long everything fits inside the clear plastic bag provided.

Essential medicines needed during the flight may be allowed through security in larger amounts than the 100ml limit. But you need to get approval from the airline for this before your date of departure.

If the medicine container is bigger than 100mls you should keep this in your hand luggage and present it at security for inspection. You will need written proof, such as a doctor’s letter, to say what the liquid is. You may also be asked to taste the liquid as part of the security check.

The Department for Transport and the British Airports Authority websites have up-to-date advice on taking liquid medicines on board flights.

Different airlines and airports may have different rules about carrying liquid medicines in larger amounts than 100ml. So, you should contact your airline and airport for advice before you travel.
